Will cleaning your solar panels void the warranty? Only if it's done badly

Cleaning itself doesn't void a solar warranty — method does. Abrasives, harsh chemicals, walking on the modules and high-pressure water driven into the frame seals are what give a manufacturer grounds to decline. Deionised water and a soft brush is the accepted standard. And it is worth doing: NREL puts typical soiling loss at about 5% of annual output, up to 25% in the dirtiest locations.

Cleaning is not the risk — the method is

Panel warranties are written about damage and performance, not about hygiene. Nothing in a standard set of terms says a clean panel is a disqualified panel. What a manufacturer cares about is whether something you did put the glass, the cells, the coating or the perimeter seals outside the condition they warranted. A wash done properly leaves all four exactly as they were, only cleaner. A wash done badly changes the hardware. That is the line, and it is the only line that matters.

So the question most homeowners ask — will cleaning void my warranty — is the wrong question. The better one is whether a particular method leaves a mark someone could point to in two years' time. Microcracks in the cells. A scoured anti-reflective layer. Moisture inside the laminate. A frame bent by a ladder. Those are all findable. Pure water and a soft brush leave nothing to find. Same job, two completely different risk profiles, and the difference sits entirely with the hands doing it.

Four things that actually put your cover at risk

Abrasives first. Scouring pads, stiff bristles, gritty sponges, even a dry cloth dragged across dusty glass — all of them micro-scratch the anti-reflective coating that makes the panel efficient in the first place. You cannot polish that back. Second, harsh chemicals. Solvents, strong degreasers, bleach and acidic glass restorers can attack the coating, the frame's anodising and the edge sealant. They also leave residue that bakes on through the next hot week and holds dust better than the grime you removed.

Third, foot traffic. Standing on a module flexes the wafer under the glass and cracks cells you will never see from the ground. The panel keeps working, just worse, and the damage is obvious to anyone who runs a thermal camera over the array later. Fourth, high pressure aimed at the edges. Panels are sealed at the frame and behind the junction box. A jet finds those seals, pushes water past them, and creates a moisture problem inside the laminate that no amount of Sydney sun will dry out.

Deionised water and a soft brush is the accepted standard

The method that keeps everyone out of trouble is deliberately dull: deionised water, a soft brush or microfibre head, and a light touch. Deionised water has had its minerals stripped out, so it lifts grime and then dries clear — no chalky spotting, no detergent film left behind to bake on. It also means no chemistry touching the coating or the seals at all. Nothing about it looks impressive from the driveway, which is precisely why it has become the industry-standard way to wash an array.

The rest is discipline. Wash early, while the glass is still cool, because cold water on hot glass is its own way to crack a cell. Work from a fed pole wherever the pitch allows, so nobody has to stand on a module. Keep the pressure low, and keep it off the frame edges and the junction box. Rinse rather than scrub. Done that way, the array ends the morning cleaner than it started and mechanically identical to the day it went up — which is the condition your warranty assumes.

Your manual outranks anything a cleaner tells you

Every panel ships with a manual, and it has a cleaning section. It is usually a page, usually dull, and almost nobody reads it. It sets out the water, the tools, the temperature and the pressure the manufacturer accepts for that specific product — and terms vary between brands and between model years, which is why no article should tell you what yours says. That document, not a contractor's website and not a Facebook group, is what governs a claim. Keep it with your installation paperwork.

Remember too that your panels, your inverter and your installation workmanship are usually three separate warranties, from different companies, running for different periods. Mounting and roof penetrations tend to be the installer's problem, the panels the manufacturer's, the inverter its own. So a cleaner who says "don't worry, we're approved, your warranty is covered" is making a promise they have no standing to make. Be wary of anyone who guarantees your warranty instead of describing their method. Method is the only part a contractor actually controls.

What you are protecting is about five per cent of every sunny day

None of this is an argument for leaving the panels dirty. Soiling — the film of dust, pollen, salt and bird mess that builds between decent downpours — costs real output. Research from NREL puts the typical annual loss at about 5% of production, and as high as 25% in the dirtiest locations. Sydney homes near the harbour and the coast sit at the wrong end of that range, because salt haze settles on the glass and then holds dust in place until something washes it off properly.

Be honest about the ceiling, though. If your output has dropped and the glass is already clean, cleaning will not recover it — that is a shading, string, inverter or degradation issue, and it belongs to an electrician rather than to us. Cleaning fixes soiling and nothing else.
