Does gutter guard actually work?
Partly. Gutter guard cuts the leaf load and how often you climb up, but it does not end maintenance. Fine debris, seed and grit still wash through and settle, and some mesh traps moisture against the gutter. Guard is a filter, not a lid
Gutter guard is mesh or a solid cover fitted over the gutter line. Good guard does one job well: it keeps whole leaves, twigs and the odd tennis ball out of the channel. On a house ringed by paperbarks or a big gum, that is a real cut in leaf load, and it means fewer trips up the ladder through the year. If someone sells it as fit-and-forget, they are selling you the ladder back, not the truth.
The catch is in the word filter. A filter, by definition, holds something back and lets the rest pass. Fine mesh stops leaves but passes wind-blown grit, roof-tile granules and seed. Coarse mesh lets small leaves and needle debris straight through. Whatever grade you fit, you are only choosing which debris gets caught on top and which settles below the cover. Neither version empties itself, and neither version stays clean without a hand.
The fine stuff still builds — on top and underneath
Under a guard, two things keep growing. Below the mesh, fine sediment — grit, granules washed off the roof, broken-down organic matter — settles into a sludge that narrows the channel and chokes the outlets. On top, seed lands, catches in the mesh and germinates; a guard wearing a fringe of grass and a skin of soil sheds water past the gutter rather than into it. This is exactly why guarded gutters still overflow in the storm that actually matters.
Some guard makes it worse in one specific way: it traps moisture. Mesh laid flat can hold a damp layer of debris against the metal, and in the marine pockets of the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs a permanently wet mat of litter works against the steel rather than for it. Guard that sheds water and dries out is fine. Guard that has quietly become a soggy blanket is a slow problem you will never spot from the ground.
Your insurer reads the gutters, not the brochure
Water finds its way inside the moment a gutter overflows — down the fascia, into the eaves, behind the wall. The reasonable-upkeep bar stays exactly where it was: gutters clear, outlets flowing, downpipes running. Guard can make that bar easier to hit with fewer climbs a year. It cannot clear the bar on your behalf, and no assessor will accept the mesh as proof the channel underneath it was ever clean.
Clean and inspect on the same schedule — guard or no guard
Treat guarded gutters like any other gutter: cleared and checked at least twice a year, and again after the big autumn drop or a heavy storm. The work is a little different — sections of guard get lifted or cleared, the sludge below gets flushed, outlets and downpipes get tested, and the mesh itself gets cleared of the seed and soil sitting on top. The point of the visit is the part you cannot see from the driveway: the channel hiding under the cover.
