Concrete gone grey: ten years of film, gone by lunch

4 min read · Updated 20 July 2026

Yes — an old concrete driveway cleans up. The grey is not the concrete; it is a film of diesel soot, tyre dust and algae laid down so slowly you never saw it happen. A rotary surface cleaner strips it back to the poured colour in a morning, without wand stripes. Most Sydney driveways run $180-$420; the job starts from $180.

The film you never watched arrive

Concrete does not turn grey overnight. It picks up atmospheric fallout — diesel soot, brake dust, tyre residue, pollen, and a thin lawn of algae wherever shade lingers — in layers too fine to notice. Each week the driveway looks the same as last week, so your eye recalibrates and calls it clean. Run that forward a decade and the surface you park on shares almost nothing with the surface that was poured.

The proof is always the first pass. The machine cuts a strip and the strip is a different material — warmer, lighter, tighter. Homeowners regularly meet us at the kerb mid-job because the half-done driveway looks like a paving error. It is not. It is the line between ten years of Sydney air and the concrete underneath, and by lunch the whole slab sits on the right side of it.

Your driveway has a colour — probably

Most poured concrete was never grey. It was off-white, cream, sand, sometimes an oxide tint chosen from a chart on the concreter's ute. Exposed aggregate had its stones picked for their colour. That decision is still there, buried under the film, and cleaning is simply the act of getting back to it. Nothing is added — no coating, no paint, no colour treatment. The driveway you get back is the one you paid for.

Worth being straight about the limits. Cleaning removes what sits on the surface. It does not close cracks, undo spalling, or lift oil that has soaked deep into old, porous concrete — a fresh spill releases; a ten-year stain usually fades rather than vanishes. If the slab itself has worn through to its aggregate, that texture is permanent. We will tell you which camp your driveway is in before the machine starts, not after.

The machine matters more than the pressure

The tool most operators reach for is a wand. Held by hand, a wand cleans in overlapping arcs at slightly different heights and distances, and every variation prints itself into the concrete as a stripe. The zebra pattern only shows once the surface dries — after the operator has been paid and left. It can take months of weathering to blend, and on smooth concrete it sometimes never fully does.

Schmick runs a rotary surface cleaner instead: two jets spinning inside a flat hood, held at a fixed height, covering the slab in even passes like a mower. Same pressure at every point, so no stripes and no etching from a lance held too close — the wand comes out only for edges and corners, where it can be controlled. Every job is photographed before and after: the strip test at the start, the full slab at the end.

Seal it while it is clean, or don't — but decide now

Freshly cleaned concrete is also freshly open. A penetrating sealer applied while the surface is bare slows the whole cycle down — the film gets less to hold onto, oil beads instead of soaking, and the next clean is both further away and easier. Sealing is a set add-on on the driveway price, and it only makes sense on the day of the clean. Sealing over grime just laminates the problem in place.

It is optional, and we will say so when your concrete does not warrant it — a rough broom-finished slab in full sun often does fine bare. But a driveway under trees, or one shaded enough to regrow algae by autumn, gets its money back. Either way, the decision is easiest on the one day a decade you can actually see the surface you are deciding about.

A number before the trailer is hitched

On price: most Sydney driveways run $180 to $420, set by area, and the work starts from $180. A standard double driveway is a morning — set up, strip test, surface cleaner, edges, rinse, photos — and done by lunch, as promised. Bundling it with windows, gutters or a house wash on the same visit trims 5-15% off the lot, since the trailer is already in your street.

Nobody needs to stand on the slab to price it. The instant quote reads your driveway's area and returns a firm, bookable number in about 60 seconds — and it holds unless the place is materially different from what you told us. Ten years of film went on without an appointment. Getting it off only takes one.
